Curriculum projects


VoyagerScience seeks to recast classic Project-Based Learning curricula into the latest collaborative GIS ecosystem – for data collectio, analysis, and presentation of findings.  VoyagerScience is actively under development during 2021.


The Esri GeoInquiries project, started in 2014, is designed to provide a standards-based, content-forward approach to using GIS to advance subject matter learning in several key K-12 subject areas. GeoInquiries use ArcGIS Online, are free, and licensed under Creative Commons.  Current collections include:

  • Earth science
  • US history
  • World history
  • Human geography
  • Environmental science
  • Mathematics
  • American literature
  • Upper elementary (integrated)
  • Government/Civics

In 2018, “Level 2” GeoInquiries were introduced encouraging the use of analysis tools to further critical understanding of spatial topics addressed in the activities.


The Extending Scientific Inquiry through Collaborative GIS (ESIC-GIS) project was an NSF-funded teacher professional development and materials development project housed in the Center for STEM Learning at the University of Kansas.  The aim of ESIC was to advance the tools and techniques of scientific inquiry in classrooms with the aid of geospatial tools.  Historical documentation of ESIC, while available for review, has not been updated to include modern technologies in over a decade.

KanCRN and ESIC-GIS were all constructed around the double V design, encouraging iterative scientific investigation.

PathFinder Science/KanCRN, 1997-2004 bigfooter

KanCRN (later PathFinder Science, LLC) was an online collaborative network organized around projects engaging students in scientific partnerships and models to study world. Collaborative projects included:

  • Bird monitoring
  • Lichens and SO2
  • Global warming
  • Tardigrades
  • Particulate monitoring
